Nowadays, smart devices are part of the everyday life of children and adolescents. That’s why now, more than ever, parents should worry about the negative effects of technology on children.

Although there are benefits of these devices, it’s necessary to be cautious and provide permanent accompaniment.

It’s also essential that families cultivate healthy habits regarding the use of technology. When adults becomes dependent on their mobile phone or computer, it’s difficult for their children not to be.

To avoid complications during a child’s development, it’s very important that there be moderation and good measure. Put these recommendations into practice:

What are the negative effects of technology?

1. Increases intimidation

The internet has become one of the most widely used means for bullies to take out their anger on others. Though a screen, kids can suffer from serious psychological abuse, which can affect them in many ways.

Those who bully are shielded by anonymity and it’s difficult to fight against what is published on the web.

2. Lack of privacy

When children and adolescents gain access to social networks, they give up much of their privacy. On the internet, all profiles are visible and accessible, even to unscrupulous people. Children are perhaps the most susceptible to the dangers of these web pages.

In this aspect, technology facilitates children’s exposure from an early age. Of course, the risks are much greater without adult supervision.

3. Deconstruction of social ties

Children of previous generations lived adventurously, playing in open spaces and interacting with other children everywhere. Emotional links were built on common interest and time spent together.

Currently, relationships established through technological devices are much more frequent. Little by little, the importance of personal contact becomes devalued.

“Children are more exposed to technological devices than ever before, and that habit must be changed as it could lead to addiction or depression. Children born nowadays will have spent the equivalent to one year glued to screens before reaching the age of seven. The attitude of the family at home with respect to technology is an important factor in the child’s relationship with it”

4. Loss of consciousness of reality

When there is no safe environment emotionally and physically, many kids flee to the web. Only by having an internet connection can they imagine the life they like most and, thus, be alien to their own reality.

Even the shyest and most insecure children, who don’t have friends in school, can open their social profile and have thousands of contacts. Technology is a means for many people of different ages to hide from who they are.

In addition…

  • As the development of children’s brains is still incomplete, excessive exposure to technology can actually deteriorate it. This is one of the most dangerous negative effects of technology on the future of their mental health.
  • Too much TV time affects the development of language and creativity. Watching TV is an activity that doesn’t require any response from the child and doesn’t stimulate the imagination. It also interferes negatively with a healthy taste for reading and creates a “need” to consume more and more.
  • Many children of recent generations don’t know how to have fun without an electronic device. They stop playing outdoors or using their toys because they don’t find them interesting. This means they have few hobbies and interests outside of technology.
  • Children who spend a lot of time with video games or television are more likely to develop obesity. Other consequences associated with sedentary lifestyles are sleep problems and digestive disorders.

“Technology is the means of many people of different ages to hide from who they are”

Through technological elements we can enhance children’s abilities. We can also access information and interactive materials that contribute to their development.

However, the inappropriate use of this tool has undesirable consequences. To avoid the negative effects of technology, set limits and motivate your children to enjoy their lives without relying on a phone, tablet, TV or a computer.
