Who Says Having a C-Section Is Easy?

Last update: 17 February, 2018

Many women think that having a C-section is easy, and others think that this makes them less of a mother. Why they think this isn’t clear, as it couldn’t be further from the truth.

In some circumstances, a cesarean section is the safest procedure when there are complications during vaginal delivery.

In many cases the mother does not know in advance that her child is going to be born by cesarean section, and sometimes they experience a lot of fear and pain.

The mental and physical suffering increases with each minute; no one is relieved to find out they’ll need to have a C-section.

Lying on a stretcher for hours, in pain and anguish while hearing words that scare you is not easy. However, that is the easiest part of the procedure, because going to an operating room is not a cake walk.

Unfortunately, we are also criticized for giving birth this way, as if our we are narrow-minded and we have chosen the easy way out.

Some people believe that we actually could give birth naturally but we have chosen the more comfortable option, and that is not true.

However, even if that were the case, it would still be our decision. It is a cutting-edge procedure that we can choose if we wish. The reasons for choosing a cesarean section are our business.

Having a C-Section Doesn’t Make You Less Of A Mother

For some reason, many people, even women, criticize other women who have a cesarean section. It is thought to be the easy option, which some choose in order to avoid the complications and horrors of a vaginal birth.

To look down on mothers who give birth in this way is petty and certainly unfair.

Some people  believe they are more of a woman than others for the simple fact of having given birth vaginally. But this is not the case, a C-section is not easier.

All aspects of surgery can be risky, frightening and complex. Of course we would all prefer to have a stress and worry free delivery, but that is not always up to us.

The truth is that if a mother chooses this option, she is free to do so. The doctors are there to perform the surgery who have the training to do it.

If the risks are greater, that is our business and no one should give their opinion in a mean spirited way.

Recovery after a cesarean section takes longer than that of a normal childbirth, which can be overnight. For weeks, help from your partner and other relatives is essential in order for you to be up to the task of taking care of your baby.

Getting up, coughing, sneezing, or laughing will all be painful.

That is why it is advisable to have a pillow to support the incision and prevent your stitches from splitting. The nurse will also help you and will check in on you frequently.

Recovery From A Cesarean Section Takes Longer

We can understand that some people would have a bad opinion of C-sections because they seem more dangerous and complicated, but not because they seem easy.

A woman’s body takes longer to recover from a C-section, but there are also dangers during natural childbirth.

Although many mothers don’t know this, after a C-section many things hurt. It is very common for gases to accumulate in the stomach. This is mainly because the intestines are inactive after the surgery.

If you are struggling with this, it can be helpful to get up and keep moving, taking small steps when you walk to the bathroom.

Keeping moving without straining yourself will prevent you from developing blood clots. Feeling sore and swollen is normal during the first few days; good treatment at home is the best way to recover.

You should also urinate frequently so that your bladder does not press on your wound. Depending on what the doctor tells you, your stitches will be taken out.

This may happen in a few days after your procedure, or if you need more time for the wound to heal, the doctor will inform you.

In the following cases, you should consider calling your doctor:

  • If the pain gets worse
  • If you have a fever
  • If you feel pain or burning when urinating
  • If the area of the incision is swollen or red

It would be nice if you could spend your time resting, but you must walk in order to help heal the wound. In addition, walking helps you to avoid complications such as blood clots after a cesarean section.

Although you must not overdo it in the first few days, you can recover by walking little by little. Regulate your physical activity, until a doctor allows you to do more moderate exercise.
