When children are born in extreme seasons like summer and winter, parents often have doubts as to how to dress them. As for summer, moms and dads often assume that less is best. But is that really true? What summer clothing should newborns wear during the warmer months of the year?

The answer may seem contradictory. The fact of the matter is, newborns perceive temperature differently than older children and adults. While the climate may seem severe and hot for you, your baby may be perfectly comfortable. Or he or she might even be cold.

As we mentioned above, newborn babies don’t perceive temperatures the same way that adults do. This means that we need to take several things into consideration when dressing our tiny babies.

The first fact we need to keep in mind is that newborn babies regulate body temperature through their feet and head. Therefore, even if the day is particularly warm, you should still keep your baby’s head and feet covered. Choose light fabrics, such as cotton.

Another point to consider has to do with the type of skin that babies have. Because their skin is so thin and delicate, newborns are prone to skin irritations due to heat. The same can happen because of friction between their skin and fabric if their clothing is too tight.

Therefore, you should dress your baby in loose fitting clothing that is free of synthetic fibers. Choose natural, organic fabrics and opt for white, undyed articles whenever possible.

Types of fabric that are best for newborns

When it comes to getting your little one dressed in summer, you should prioritize fabric over design. The best options as far as fabric goes are cotton, hemp, linen, silk, or ramie .

Without a doubt, the best option is always cotton. Check tags before making purchases and make sure that articles are made of 100% cotton. Furthermore, opt for fabrics that don’t contain dyes, especially dark colors. Fabric dyes can be irritating to your child’s delicate skin.

Types of outfits for day and night

During summer, newborn babies should use basic items that offer both comfort and protection. Your little one’s summer collection should include side-snap tees, onesies, socks or booties, hats and blankets.

Undershirts

White cotton undershirts are a must in the wardrobe of a newborn baby, they’re very versatile. If temperatures rise excessively, you can remove a layer of clothing and your baby’s chest will still be covered in soft, comfortable clothing .

Onesies or bodysuits

Choose bodysuits that are made of cotton and have snaps between the legs. Not only do these snaps make diaper changes easier, they also allow you to unsnap and loosen clothing if it gets too hot.

During the summer, you can opt for short-sleeved bodysuits. These allow your child’s legs and arms to move freely and avoid sweating.

Cotton socks or booties

Use simple cotton booties or socks to cover your baby’s feet. Choose thin, light items to avoid overheating your little one. Also avoid using shoes.

Hat

As we mentioned above, your baby’s feet and head are what help him or her to regulate body temperature. You can choose cloth caps or knitted or crochet hats. Once again, always choose cotton.

Blanket

A thin cotton blanket is a great ally during the summer months. For example, a blanket allows you to dress your child in lighter clothing, with the option of wrapping him or her up if necessary. Blankets also allow your child’s skin to breathe and adjust to different changing temperatures throughout the day.

As a final recommendation, don’t use any perfumes on your baby during the first 6 months of life. They may produce rash. Also, stay away from accessories that may cause sweating and, as a result, irritation.

At the same time, remember that during your child’s first months of life, you shouldn’t take him or her to the beachThis is extremely important, so you should stay away from any activities by the sea.
