Shared Emotions: Your Baby Feels Everything You Feel
Your baby feels everything you feel. The strongest emotional bond that you will forge in your life is the one that develops with your child while they are still in the womb.
Your baby is capable of appreciating, hearing and feeling the world around them, and can tell how you are feeling.
During pregnancy, the regular beating of your heart gives your baby a sense of calm and security. If you receive unpleasant news, however, and your heart races, your baby’s instincts will alert them instantly.
Your child knows when everything is going well out there, or if things are going wrong. There are things that you learn only once you become a mother, and this is one of them.
When everything is good
A mother does more than just nourish her baby with the diet they need. She also feeds her child’s emotions.
Within the placenta, children get more from their parents than just the food they need to live and grow. They also take in other substances that allow them to receive information about the world around them, whether negative or positive.
Let’s look at an example. A mother who is happy secretes endorphins. These hormones, which are associated with happy emotions, aid relaxation and are good for the developing fetus.
When the baby hears their mother’s voice, they are capable of feeling the love that she transmits. This is why it is so important to talk to your child when they are still in the womb, building your emotional bond.
The vibrations of a woman’s vocal chords, slow and harmonic, transmit peace, confidence and security to her child.
The sound of a mother’s hand as she strokes her belly and the nursery rhymes she hums all help to create a stability for the child.
When you put these types of actions into practice throughout your pregnancy, your fetus will be able to develop in a calm environment.
When things go wrong
As we have said, your baby feels everything you feel. This means that they are also capable of sensing your feelings and state of mind.
Through the umbilical cord, the fetus receives neurotransmitters and hormones that affect them in a similar way to their mother.
When mom is under pressure, her levels of cortisol rise. Increased levels of this stress hormone in her blood reach the placenta, and therefore the fetus too. The baby knows immediately that their mother is upset, and becomes distressed.
If you are worried, nervous or afraid, or if you are doubting, crying, suffering… your baby will know.
Your emotional bond with your baby
It is every mother’s responsibility to protect her child.
Pregnant mothers should avoid anything that could harm the future emotional development and physical wellbeing of their babies.
Since fetuses are capable of perceiving what their mothers are thinking, try to think positive and remember happy moments.
Try to stay away from unpleasant news, movies about issues that make you uncomfortable, stressful situations and confrontations with those around you.
Fill your mind with good memories and happy images, and your life with smiling people. Your child will receive all the happiness and peace of these positive impressions.
Seek out harmonious environments, laugh, live and love with the same intensity as always. Listen to the music you like. All this is just as important as taking your vitamins, controlling your weight and blood pressure and going to checkups with your doctor.
Taking care of your physical and mental health is all part of taking care of your child.
