4 Water Experiments for Children

Water experiments for kids
Here, we’ll give you some science activities that you can enjoy together as a family at home:
1. Runaway Pepper
For this experiment you’ll need:
- Water
- A bowl
- Ground pepper
- Liquid soap
Process:
- Add a little bit of water to the bowl.
- Sprinkle the pepper on the water until it covers the surface.
- Take a small drop of liquid soap and lightly place it on your finger.
- Then, touch the surface of the water with your fingertip.
When you do this last step, you’ll see how the pepper moves quickly away from the place where the soap touched. Some will fall to the bottom, and some will go to the edges of the bowl.
What’s going on?
The molecules of water are linked by bonds. This allows the surface layer to have a light substance on it.
This is called surface tension, and it’s what allows the pepper to float. Then, the detergent decreases this tension by interfering with the forces.
When that tension is broken and the pepper has no way to sustain itself, it separates. It’ll either go towards the bottom or edges of the bowl.
2. Rainbow in a bottle
You’ll need:
- A transparent plastic bottle
- Honey
- Corn syrup
- Dish soap
- Water
- Alcohol
- Food coloring
Process:
- Firstly, add color to the corn syrup, water, oil, and alcohol. Be sure to use a different color for each liquid.
- Then, pour the liquids in a bottle. Start with the honey, then continue in this order: corn syrup, dish soap, water, oil and alcohol. Use a good amount to form a layer of at least 1/2 inch.
- The liquids need to be in layers. Be careful not to mix them. They form a beautiful rainbow that you can admire in the light.
What’s going on?
Density is how you measure the molecular force in solids, liquids, and gases. Each substance has its own density, and this experiment shows items’ different densities.
Liquids with more molecules, thus more density, are heavier. They sink to the bottom without mixing with the others. Others that are lighter stay at the top.

3. The water cycle
For this experiment you’ll need:
- A transparent plastic bottle
- Water
- Blue food coloring
- Felt pens
Process:
- Firstly, draw the sky with the sun and some clouds on top of the bottle.
- Next, pour some water in the bottle, filling it about halfway, and cover it.
- Then, place the bottle in the sun for a while.
- The water at the bottom of the bottle evaporates when the sun warms it. Then, it rises and forms water droplets on top of the bottle.
What’s going on?
This bottle shows a simple part of the water cycle. The sun warms it, and it rises into the atmosphere in the form of water vapor. It creates the clouds that store it.
The vapor that’s in the clouds condenses. Then, when it meets a cold current of air, it falls in the form of rain. This is one of the best water experiments for children.
4. Walking water
The materials for this experiment are:
- Water
- 3 transparent containers of the same size
- Paper towels
- Blue and yellow food dyes
Process:
- Firstly, fill two of the containers halfway with water.
- Then, mix the water in one of the containers with yellow dye and the other with blue.
- Place the three containers in a row (the empty one in the middle).
- Fold two paper towels to make strips.
- Add one end of the strip to the yellow water container. Next, add the other end to the empty bottle. Finally, do the same to the blue water container.
Watch how the water transfers containers from the paper towels. Your kids will love watching how it turns green.
What’s going on?
The water molecules are united with each other and everything they’re in contact with. This is called adhesion. Capillarity is also important here, which is the ability of liquids to move up in the spaces of a porous material.
In these water experiments, children can see how the molecules stick to the paper towel. They can watch how it’s also attached to the rest of the liquid. Additionally, they see how two primary colors combine to create a new one.
