Giving birth is one of the most difficult and important experiences in a woman’s life. But, let’s admit it, there are some pretty embarrassing moments that can happen to anyone.

If you have given birth before, you’ll know just what I’m talking about. If not, you’ll probably still have heard about some of those things that can happen during labor. And I’m not just talking about breathing and pushing.

Let’s take a look at some of those embarrassing moments that can happen during childbirth. If you’re already a mom, maybe they’ll remind you of the moment you gave birth to your little bundle of joy.

1. Your water breaks in public

When your water breaks, the fluids get everywhere. What if it happens in a public place? Your clothes will be all wet, as if you’ve just peed yourself.

But don’t worry. When you’re heavily pregnant, that kind of accident will be the last thing on everyone’s mind. Bystanders will run to help you. You’re in labor, and you need to get to a hospital as soon as possible!

2. Your water breaks while the doctor is examining you

Yes, this is common. It may be during a routine exam, or when your obstetrician is with you during labor. It’s not the end of the world, though; your doctor will be completely used to this happening. You might be more worried about it than they are, when you see fluids everywhere.

3. You poop on yourself

Don’t stress about this. It’s more common than you can imagine: many women have to answer nature’s call during labor. When you push, you might feel so much pain that you won’t even realize what’s happening. But if you feel like you need to go, go.

No nurse will tell you to hold it in. You’re giving birth, anything goes. I can assure you that whether you poop or not will be the last of your worries when the time comes. The staff will clean you right up, and you’ll keep on pushing.

4. You look in a mirror

When the baby’s head appears during a vaginal birth, the medical team might offer you the chance to see it in a mirror.

If you’ve had an epidural, you’ll probably be able to look because you won’t feel so much pain from pushing. But if you opt for a vaginal birth without an epidural, as much as you might want to see your child for the first time, the pain might stop you from focusing.

Your baby will be in your arms soon, and it will all be over. The mirror isn’t a bad idea, but don’t worry if you can’t see a thing.

5. They tell you it shouldn’t hurt with an epidural…but it does

Although birth with an epidural is slower and pushing is harder due to the loss of sensation, there is no pain, and labor is easier…for some women, that is.

But sometimes, the epidural doesn’t work, or doesn’t numb the pain completely. In these cases, of course, giving birth does hurt, just as much as it does with no or less anesthesia.

So, if you have pain relief or an epidural and you notice the pain coming back, speak up about it. It doesn’t always work, so don’t let anyone tell you that the epidural works magic, because it doesn’t.

Do you have an anecdote to tell about your birth? Don’t forget to share it, we love reading about your funny, silly and embarrassing moments.
