We’re talking here about a magnificent illustrated book published in 2017 by Flamboyant, a publisher that specializes in children’s and young adult literature.

At first glance, it may seem like a book that tells a single story. However, once children delve into it, they’ll discover that there are several stories there, each one independent of the previous one.

As the title of the book indicates, children will discover different powers that they themselves can identify with. We’re not really talking about superpowers, of course. These are powers that any child can have. In this way, the little ones will feel special as they discover how they too can have “superpowers.”

The Big Book of Superpowers

The book’s structure

The structure of the double-page layouts is repeated throughout the book. It’s a large-format book where we find a small piece of text on the left-hand side. The text introduces the character with the superpower, the special ability they have, and, finally, the definition of the character’s superpower.

On the right-hand side, which sometimes crosses on to the left, there’s a beautiful illustration that conveys everything that the child will have read about. The illustrations show the main character along with something related to his or her superpower.

Who’s the target audience of the book?

It’s primarily recommended for children from four or five years old upwards. However, it can also be used with slightly younger children because of what the lovely illustrations can transmit to them. Even older children can benefit from the values that they’ll capture from its pages.

It’s an ideal book to teach children to begin to believe more in themselves, in their abilities, and in their possibilities. It’s also an ideal tool that teachers can use in the classroom to improve the children’s emotional development.

Values transmitted in The Big Book of Superpowers

As we said at the beginning, what makes this book special are its two fundamental aspects:

  • The humanization of the values, as Susana Isern makes reference to capabilities that we all have.
  • The transmission of these values through the text and the wonderful illustrations.

In all, there are 18 powers that the child can discover with you. However, it doesn’t end there, because each of these powers is loaded with emotions and even more values for the children to learn.

It’s one of the most suitable books around to work on emotional intelligence and education, with superpowers such as dancing, the gift of storytelling, reading, optimism and perseverance, among many others. In addition to this, and thanks to the way the book has been thought out, you can continue to carry out many different activities once you’ve finished reading it.

The most important thing of all, which you can find in a small test at the end of the book, is that the children can learn how to choose one, two, or more of the superpowers, and that they can really believe they have them.

Reading this fantastic book is a positive way to encourage children, and to make their self-esteem grow, as well as their virtues.

And, finally, another of the messages we want to highlight is that these abilities, far from alienating us or seeming strange to us, should serve as a source of enrichment to make us truly unique people.
