Last update: 30 August, 2022

Summer’s usually a time of fun and recreation for children, but at the same time, the heat is irritating and suffocating. That’s why you’ll need to find ways to get your kids involved in activities that will help them cope better with the high temperatures. Here are some plans for kids when it’s too hot.

Doing water or outdoor activities after the sun goes down will make kids have fun and feel cooler. Keep in mind that exposing them too long to very high temperatures can be detrimental to their health. Excessive heat can cause cramps, dehydration, sunstroke, or heatstroke.

So, as a general rule, keep children out of the sun in the middle of the day. Make sure they drink enough water to stay hydrated, instruct them to play in the shade, and protect their skin with appropriate clothing. Also, instill the habit of using sunscreen in the case of exposure to the sun’s rays.

When the days get too hot, it’s important for children to avoid too much exposure to the sun and high temperatures. Staying in air-conditioned environments may seem like the easiest thing to do, but kids can quickly get bored there and the electricity bill will cost you dearly. Fortunately, there are other entertaining alternatives that can make them cool off while having a great time. Let’s see what they are!

Going to the pool is usually a favorite activity for children during the summer, as they have fun, cool off, and make new friends.

1. Swimming in pools and water parks

Swimming in pools, rivers, beaches, lakes, or waterfalls will always be an excellent option for your children in the summer. Water parks have wave pools, water games, and slides that will ensure entertainment.

Make sure that children don’t get into the water during the middle of the day when it’s hotter and the sun hits their skin almost vertically. Also, before putting them in the water, dress them in appropriate clothing and apply sunscreen beforehand. The use of hats and goggles will protect them even more.

No matter the age of your children, you should always keep an eye on them while they’re inside or in areas near the pool in order to avoid accidents.

2. Play with water guns

If your plan is to stay at home, you can gather some of your little ones’ friends to play with water guns, water balloons, or sprinkler hoses. It’s a plan that can be very appealing to kids and will certainly cool them off. Water activities are easy to do and bring a lot of fun on summer days when it’s too hot.

3. Visit museums or theaters

A visit to a museum, a theater, or a library is on the list of plans for kids when it’s too hot. Taking your children to these places is a good option in the summer, as, in addition to learning, they’ll enjoy good air conditioning that will keep them away from the heat for several hours.

Educational and recreational sites are characterized by being very well acclimatized and your children won’t suffer the high temperatures. Another good option is to take them shopping at a mall or to an indoor playground.

4. Go see a movie at the theater

Movie theaters have the particularity of being quite cool due to the air conditioning. Children will be entertained for two or three hours watching a movie that appeals to them and will avoid the incessant heat outside.

At the same time, there are also outdoor movie theater alternatives that usually show movies in the evening when the sun goes down and the temperature drops. These events are usually free and are aimed at children and young people. Find out if your community or city offers this type of activity.

5. Make delicious ice cream

An excellent plan to cool off and entertain the kids during these summer days is to make delicious ice cream or popsicles at home with the kids. Playing chef excites most little ones, so creating easy popsicles with fruit juices will be great for them. Plus, it’s an option that doesn’t require great culinary skills.

To make them, use lemons, oranges, and strawberries, and place the popsicles in molds with the juice of these fruits. Then, take them to the freezer and once they’re frozen, share them with the children and adults in the house. They’ll love them and will feel the coolness when they drink them!

Have fun and cool off at the same time

Apart from the list that we’ve shared here, you could add other plans you can think of to have fun and cool off your little ones this summer.

Always remember to organize these activities at the beginning of the day or at dusk, when the sun isn’t so intense and the temperatures have dropped.
