Learn the origin and meaning of the name Carmen

The name Carmen comes from the Arabic Karmel or Karem El, in Hebrew, which means ‘garden of God’ and ‘God’s vineyard’. In Latin, it refers to ‘song’, ‘poem’, ‘ode’ or ‘chant’.

Carmen is actually related to Mount Carmel, in the Holy Land, a very fertile territory located between Galilee and Samaria, which in ancient times was covered by vineyards. The prophet Elijah lived in a grotto on Carmel and, inspired by him, a group of hermits settled there. Then, around 1200, they founded the Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (Carmelites). From there comes the invocation of the Virgin of Mount Carmel.

According to tradition, the Virgin appeared to one of the religious men, St. Simon Stock. Consequently, in memory of this event, July 16th is celebrated as the day of the Virgin of Mount Carmel. Because it’s associated with religion, we also get the compound name María del Carmen or Mary Carmen.

This beautiful name is attributed to Hispanic women worldwide. It became very popular in Spain, where it continues to position itself for decades as one of the preferred names to assign to girls, either as a first or middle name.
